Pride Month 2021: Macquarie Pride EMEA’s campaign blitz
Pride Month is an important time of year for the LGBTQ+ community, as it commemorates the Stonewall Riots that took place in Greenwich Village in New York in late June 1969. This event started the modern LGBTQ+ rights movement and was a major catalyst for societal change in the US and across the globe.
Marking over 50 years of history, the month of June is not only a reminder to us all how far we have come as a society, but also how much further we still have to go. For this reason, Pride Month is seen equally as a celebration and a protest to the injustices that still remain. Countless stories continue to demonstrate how individuals in the LGBTQ+ community are discriminated against and non-accepting attitudes towards the community still exist today.
At Macquarie, the diversity of our people is our greatest strength. An inclusive workplace enables us to embrace diversity to deliver more innovative and sustainable solutions for our clients, shareholders, communities and most importantly our people.
The Macquarie Pride EMEA Employee Network Group (ENG) is planning to highlight the issues that face the LGBTQ+ community through impactful internal and external communications and will once again include important outward-facing messaging acknowledging “We’re proud when our people are” in the lobby of the London office. The lobby will also showcase the Section 28 legislation that was repealed in 2003 – autographed by former Prime Minister, Tony Blair. Internally, a large custom Progress Pride flag will be installed in the open plan atrium and visible to all staff in the office, the in-house café will serve Pride themed food and snacks and the digital screens will show videos, featuring several senior executive allies, highlighting their experience and sharing facts about Pride Month.
The Macquarie Pride EMEA network is known for hosting a volume of high-quality events. For Pride Month this year, the network has had to adapt due to the pandemic and will hold a series of virtual events from mid-June to mid-July, including:
- a fascinating discussion about conversion therapy, its interaction with faith/religion, and its impact on personal wellbeing, on Tuesday 15 June;
- a fun interactive quiz-with-a-twist social event, raising funds for our flagship charity, The Outside Project, on June 29; and
- an educational event deep-diving into the subject of non-binary, presented by Gendered Intelligence, on July 14 to mark International Non-Binary People’s Day.
Members of the Pride EMEA network will also be speaking at a number of external events during Pride Month, including ones organised by the London Bisexual Network, DiversityQ, MyGwork, The Diversity Network and CityParents.
The Macquarie Pride EMEA network very much encourages and looks forward to this important annual campaign and hope we can count on your engagement.
